The History of World Cinema was an intensive one week long class that I attended at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, as part of my Film and Video Communication studies.

We watched the cinemas of many regions of the world which we had left relatively untouched in the past, such as African, Israeli, Thai, Sri Lankan, Vietnamese, and so on. Of course, a week only allows one to touch very cursorily upon the cinemas of the world, but each person researched the cinemas of two nations in detail to share it with the rest of the class.

I chose Vietnam and Sri Lanka, because their recent violent histories and their proximity to India made me curious about the cinema they were producing.

Once I began to read, I realised that

  • The Cinema of a nation was too vast a subject, and to present at the end of the week, I had to simplify.

  • The research should ideally have involved the watching of a lot of the cinema which again was not possible because of the time frame. This simply meant that the final data would be entirely theoretical.

I split the research into three basic parts, which simplified it all. One was the rough Demographics of each nation, One was the historical graph of each nation since the first introduction of cinema into the nation, and one was the progression in terms of the actual films created.

On the basis of these basic parameters, I laid out the information.

The Presentation

The final form that the presentation took was the form of an infographic. This served the purpose of keeping the data for later reference. Since it had not been possible to watch many of the films, an infographic served the purpose of being able to see the film even after the course was over, and then give it context by using the infographic as a reference.
