Art Ichol is an artists' Residency located in rural Madhya Pradesh. The aim of this Residency is to isolate artists from urban city life and provide to them an environment that is tranquil and untouched. The Residency itself is designed to be like a work of art, created by sculptor Narayan Sinha.

I assisted Narayan and Ambica Beri, the art gallerist whose brainchild the project is. Having been interested in sculpture since I was nearly ten, I found this a vitalizing experience. My skill set as a Film student and writer in a Design institute also came into play when Art Ichol's website was being edited. With Sahil Sen, a filmmaker and designer from Bangalore, I created various content in the form of photographs and writing for the website while we aided Narayan in the actual creation of the designs.

Narayan's sculpture is frequently made of found material and so it was too, for Art Ichol. Ambica and Narayan sourced various materials from all across India and the first thing to do was to create an inventory of all the materials they had found inspiring and collected.

Inventory

After working with Narayan to understand his concepts and designs, we then went on to identify the materials we would be using for his designs, and worked with the welders, carpenters, electricians to execute these designs and build the furniture and interiors.

Creating the Furniture and Interiors

We used various materials to create the different parts of the Residency, such as the anchor above, suspended from the ceiling to work as chandelier after attaching ship lights to it.

Below is the shape that the space finally took.

Website

In addition to the interiors and the actual creation of the space, I edited a lot of the content that was to go up on the website of Art Ichol.

Photography:

A lot of photographs needed to be used for the website. Many of these were photographs that we had taken, but many of them were from Ambica's archives, of Artists who had visited her home in Maihar, near Ichol in the past. These photographs had to be sorted and then chosen from among her varied collections.

Content Editing:

The Wesite for Art Ichol had already been created. It was in a similar format to Ambica's Art Gallery Sanskriti's format. However, it needed some small changes in colour, type and layout, which Sahil I worked upon. I worded most of the content that is currently on the website, after developing the content as per Ambica's specific needs.
